The
Beaches South of Olinda
and Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil
are nice Places to make Excursions.
The city beaches
of Olinda
are polluted, and not recommended for swimming.
However, there are many excellent beaches
north and south of Olinda.
The Beaches South of Olinda and Recife
There are local buses to these beaches from Praça do Carmo
to Recife centre.
Buses to/ from Recife
Centre
Buses marked "Rio Doce/ Conde da Boa Vista" and "Casa
Caiada" go to the center of Recife. Taxis cost about R$ 12. From
Recife, take any "Rio Doce", "Casa Caiada" or "Jardim Atlântico" bus
to Olinda.
Buses to/ from Recife
Centre to Boa Viagem
There are local buses from Recife centre.
To/ From Boa Viagem
Buses marked "Rio Doce/ Piedade" go to Boa Viagem
and the beaches Praia de Boa Viagem and Praia de Piedade and buses marked "Rio
Doce/ Casa Caiada-Barra de Jangada" go to Boa Viagem, to the
Shopping Center Recife and to the beaches Praia de Boa Viagem and
Praia de Piedade.
To/ From Estação Mêtro to TIP (Estação
Rodoviaria)
Buses marked "Rio Doce/ Princesa Isabel" go
from Olinda to the Estação
Mêtro" to the centre of Recife (6 kilometers) and from there the
mêtro to the TIP, where de buses go in all directions.
The Excursions to the Beaches
and to other Places
of Pernambuco, Brazil by Car
Each
of these excursions to the beaches of Pernambuco you can make from
Hotel Pousada Peter within
of one day by taxidrivers of our confidence for reasonable prices.
You will hire the taxi the whole day, included the driver. Please
contact us the day before of your trip, to organize the cap and to
combine the price. The average price of the car for the wohle day is
at present between R$ 100,00 (Itamaracá) and R$ 150,00 Brazilian Real. For the longest
distances is the price for the whole day about R$ 180,00 Brazilian
Real. We help also to rent a car.
Recife
South
of the centre of Recife is the
modern
beachside district of Boa Viagem.
The street Avenida Boa Viagem is going south to the next
city of Piedade (3 kilometers) and
to the beach Praia de Piedade and
Casa Caiada.
Other beaches lie within easy reach, both north and south of the
city Recife, and there's also all the nightlife one would expect
from a city of nearly two million Brazilians.
Excellent
is the coastal route south of Recife,
where a succession of small towns and villages interrupts a glorious
stretch of palm-fringed beach.
South from Recife
The
coast south of Recife has the best beaches
in the state and is all too quickly realizing its tourist potential
– the sleepy fishing villages are unlikely to remain so for much
longer. Almost all buses to
cities south of Recife take the BR-101
highway, which runs inland through fairly dull scenery,
made worse by heavy traffic. The trick is to get a bus that goes
along the much more scenic coastal road,
the PE-60, or via litoral;
they leave from either Avenida Dantas Barreto in Recife centre or
the Recife Rodoviária for the string of towns down the coast from
Cabo, through
Ipojuca, Sirinhaém, Rio Formoso, to
São José da Coroa Grande. Before
São José, where the road starts
to run alongside the beach, you may need to get another local bus to
get to the beachside villages themselves. In theory, you could hop
from village to village down the coast on local buses, but only with
time to spare. Services are infrequent – early morning is the usual
departure time – and you might have
to sleep on a beach or find somewhere to sling a hammock,
as not all the villages have places to stay. As you move south, bays
and promontories disappear, and
walking along the beaches to the next village is often quicker
than waiting for a bus.
Know
before you go to Gaibu Brazil
The
first stop out of Recife is the beach at GAIBU, some 20km south of Boa
Viagem - catch a bus to Cabo from Avenida Dantas Barreto in the centre
of Recife, and then another local one to Gaibu. Gaibu sports the
familiar set-up - palm trees, bars and surf - and is a good base for
village-hopping, is right on the beach. Gaibu gets crowded at
weekends, but there's a particularly beautiful stretch of coastline
nearby, close enough to explore on foot. Just before
Gaibu village, a turning in the dirt
road heads off to the right, leading to the
Cabo de Santo Agostinho, a pleasant walk uphill through palms
and mango trees, past the odd peasant hut in the forest. Three
kilometres up is a ruined Dutch chapel, so overgrown it's almost
invisible, and a path to the left leads out onto a promontory where the
forest suddenly disappears and leaves you with a stunning view of the
idyllic, and usually deserted, beach Praia de
Calhetas. You can clamber down to the beach, a ring of sand
in a bay fringed with palm forest, the distant oil refinery at Suape
providing the only jarring note. This beach is particularly good for
surfing.
If
you continue on from the ruined chapel, you'll come to the sleepy hamlet
of Cabo de Santo Agostinho. During
the Dutch occupation there was vicious guerrilla fighting here, and an
infamous massacre took place when Dutch settlers were herded into a
church which was then burnt down. A small chapel still stands on the
spot and there are the pulverized remains of a fort. On the cape itself
are burnt-out shells of Dutch buildings from the same campaign, and
there's also a plaque commemorating the Spanish conquistador, Yanez
Piñon, blown south by storms on his
way
to the Caribbean in 1500. He put in here for shelter a couple of months
before Cabral "discovered" Brazil, and sailed off without knowing where
he was - thus ensuring Brazil would end up
speaking Portuguese rather than Spanish.
From
Recife to Porto de Galinhas
to Barra de Santo Antônio
A
bus from Avenida Dantas Barreto (run by the
Princesa company) will take you direct to a glorious beach,
Porto de Galinhas, 65km from Recife,
and deservedly popular – it’s in danger of becoming overdeveloped, but
still quiet enough during the week. Jangadas
will take y ou
out to the small natural coral pools just off the coast and there is
some excellent surfing here, too. Good fresh fish
is to be had in the beachside cafés; fried needle fish,
agulhas fritas, is a
great snack with a cold beer as you wiggle
your toes in the warm sand. For unbelievably tasty shrimps, lobsters and
local sobremesas visit the
excellent Beijupirá
restaurant.
 Five
kilometres away –
easily reached by
either a forty-minute
walk along the beach or a dune-buggy
ride – is one of the finest beaches
in the area, the
Praia de Maracaipe.
Another 10km further south is the beautiful
Praia da Ponta de Serrambi, popular
with windsurfers.
South
again are the sleepy fishing villages of
Tamandaré and São José da Coroa
Grande. For the time being fishing still dominates, with
jangadas drawn up on the beaches and men repairing nets, but even
here weekend houses for city slickers are going up. In Tamandaré (served
by direct bus from Recife Rodoviária), as well as the usual stunning
beach, there are the ruins of the fort of Santo Inácio, destroyed in
1646. A little way south, in São José da Coro a
Grande, where the litoral road finally hits the coast (also
served by direct bus from Recife Rodoviária), there are bars and a huge
beach. Just offshore from here is the Ilha de Santo Aleixo, with a
couple of good beaches.
