The Waterfalls
of Bonito and Primavera,
Pernambuco Brazil,
are Jewels of Brazil
- Hotel Pousada Peter
- Art Gallery,
Olinda, Pernambuco, Brazil
In
the heart of the Brazilian northeast.
The route of the waterfalls.
Pernambuco
has a delightful costline and many other unique treasures. In search
of them we found charming people, peace and waterfalls - unforgetable!
The route of the waterfalls.
Brazil always conjures up
a vision of superb beaches, coconut palms, sun and delightful, smiling
people. Flying to Recife we dream of the paradise and adventure that
awaits us and on landing there it is.
Travelling on to Olinda
and settling into our Hotel Pousada Peter,
we then went on to discover the real Brazil in the state of
Pernambuco, at Primavera, a small town with only 11.000
inhabitants.
Here we bought a supply of food and drink and hired the services of
cook who promised lunch at Cachoeira do Urubu,
a spectacular waterfall.
During this stop many
children came up to us in the hope of acquiring something, no matter
how small - even a pencil, "so I can go to school". Then
everything was ready except for stopping by the cook´s house to pick
up her daughter who was going to help her, "Tourism is good, we
always earn a little more money", she said.
Our jeep was piled with
provisions and even a local singer, who, while trying to sell his
latest disc, played a few chords on the viola. We set off through
unspoilt, green contryside, a stream here and another there, driving
along narrow dirt tracks to Teresa´s house, four walls and a roof in
the middle of the forest. "This is paradise", said her
husband as his wife prepared a powerful
drink made from sugar cane. Teresa opened the door of her small house
comprising a living room, bedroom and bathroom that she shares
with her husband, daughter and a small goat in a poverty that Teresa
wisely describes as "this is the life I have to live, so I live
it with joy".
We set off again, up and
down the road to our small paradise and eventually arrived at the
veranda overlooking the waterfall. Teresa and her daughter prepared an
exellent lunch, feijoada à brasileira, a bean stew, plus chicken and
macaroni, excellent caipirinhas made with sugar cane liquor, limes and
ice. We lunched lengthily overlooking the magnificent view of the
water cascading over the rocks in front of us, the fine spray cooling
us as we sat surrounded by lush greenery and listened to Zé playing
the viola which added the finishing touch to a delightful afternoon.
We returned smiling and
light-hearted ready for another adventure the next day - a visit to Bonito,
also in Pernambuco.
The
Waterfall Route
This time the jeep left us
in the small town of Bonito in the
interior, 137 kilometers from Recife, for
we were to visit seven waterfalls on foot. Waiting for us was
Aronilson Leal Paz who knows the area like the back of his hand,
although he is a native of Rio. Bonito with its
crystal clear stream set in verdant hills was discovered in 1783 by
hunters from Vale do Ipojuca. They called the river
Rio Bonito and
following it reached the first imposi ng 70
metre waterfall, O
Veu da Noiva, the Bride´s Veil. A good spot for adventure for
we were told, "Some people rappel down it". We were less
daring and walked down a narrow pathway next to which the water fell
in a cloud. It took us 10 minutes to reach the end of the "Veu
da Noiva"
where the rushing, splashing water, after its violent descent, was
suddenly calm and birds could be heard chirping.
Follow ing
the sound of the water we went on to the next superb waterfall at
Pedra Redonda. Here the hydro massage is natural - divine. A small
clear lake, dominated by a cascade of water that slowly descends the
slope of the hills. Here in the heart of the Brazilian northeast there
are five more waterfalls among the valleys and hills at Barra Azul,
Banho da Tornada, Mágico, Banho da Corrente, Encanto and Humaitá...
so many - a delightful day´s outing. Nature and life combined to
provide a wonderful, unforgettable experience for those who like to
travel.
